Enchant – In The Blink Of An Eye Review

Enchant entered the studio in 2001/2002 with a new lineup.  New drummer Sean Flanegan seemed to bring with him a new sense of purpose and drive in the songs.  This made ‘In The Blink Of An Eye’to be the band’s heaviest sounding album to date. Enchant has always been a little tough to categorize, are they Progressive Rock, Prog Metal, or other?  There are times where they can be put in the same genre as Dream Theater but other times you can really hear the influences of bands like Marillion or Spock’s Beard (who Ted Leonard now sings for as well). Strangely, for the Prog genre, keyboards aren’t the basis of most of the songs.

Ted Leonard has never sung better.  His soaring vocals lift Enchant above the many other bands who’s musicians are more than capable.   Doug Ott contributes some great guitar playing, from menacing electric solos to beautiful acoustic numbers. Ed Platt plays bass 🙂 .

The album starts off strong, ‘Under Fire’ is a tour-de-force about a veteran looking back at his time at war and the time ‘…in the blink of an eye I had to take someone’s life’.  He laments about what has happened to the dead person’s wife and kids, even though the solider knows it was him or the other guy.  A tremendously melodic chorus is in contrast of some of the heavier sections, but one of the best songs they’ve recorded.

‘Monday’ follows the intense opening track with a slightly more lighter fair , a person wishing they could drop out of the Rat Race and do something better with their life.  The next few songs, while good, don’t really stand out as much.  Each of them continues in a mid-tempo pace, just not as memorable as the other songs. Enchant has a formula that they use is most songs, which can lead to some songs sounding similar to others.

‘Ultimate Gift’ is the albums centerpiece clocking in at almost 8 minutes long.  It’s typical prog rock, beautiful solos, heart-wrenching lyrics and a call-back to ‘Acquaintance’ from the band’s debut album at the end.

The album ends with ‘Prognosis’ a 7.5 minute instrumental song that allows each member to show off their musical skills.

As a whole ‘In The Blink Of An Eye’ is a solid album.  Some of the songs in the middle get lost a bit but the highlights are plentiful enough to justify giving this a listen to.
